The Big Red Barn

Wedding & Event Venue Lacombe, AB

The Big Red Barn was built in 1903 by the Federal Government at the Lacombe Research Station and used to house horses for many years.  In 1995, the barn was scheduled to be destroyed and piece of history lost.

I purchased the old Hip Roof Barn in 1995 and had it moved 5 miles to my farm, where it now sits.   Mid-winter, the barn was moved by O’Connell Building Movers across the field, over the train tracks and onto the new foundation.

Restoration began with gutting the inside of the loft and removing the horse stalls downstairs, followed by a new roof and metal siding.   A few alterations to the big loft door and repair of the cupola on the roof we were set to host my son’s wedding in 1997.   We have hosted a wedding at the barn every year since!
